Student walks 20 miles to new job so CEO gifts him a car

October 8th, 2019

A strong work ethic goes a long way and if anybody can attest to that, it would be none other than college student, Walter Carr.

Carr was just starting his new job at Bellhops when his 2003 Nissan Altima broke down. He was unable to find a ride to get to work so he came up with his own solution.

Determined to make it to work, he calculated how long it would take for him to walk from his residence in Homewood to his job in Pelham.

8 hours.

The distance from Homewood to Pelham is over 20 miles.

To top it off, the job started at 8am which meant he would have to begin his walk at midnight to get to work on time.

Undeterred, Carr set out on his ambitious journey.

At 4am, cops noticed the young man and stopped to ask him if he was okay. When Carr explained his situation to them, they immediately reacted.

The cops took him to breakfast and dropped him off at the customer’s house in which he was headed.

Carr arrived an hour and a half ahead of schedule.

The customer, Jenny Lamey, was just as shocked as the officers to hear that he had set out to walk a full 8 hours just to get to work.

Lamey said that the young man was so determined and focused on work that he declined her offer to rest. He even had energy to do the job.

Lamey wanted to help Carr to alleviate his car troubles so she posted his story to her Facebook where it received a lot of attention.

She even began a GoFundMe page for him.

In it she wrote:

“I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is humble and kind and cheerful and he had big dreams! He is hardworking and tough.”

Somehow my original post was deleted. Here is it again!! I am overwhelmed that it was shared over 800 times in one day!…

Moreso, when the crew arrived, they were extremely grateful that Carr had even shown up. Lamey assumed that the crew was used to workers not showing up.

When Lamey told the crew to ask Carr how he got there, she said he kept things humble.

“I walked,” is all he would share. But Lamey convinced him to share his story with his team.

Carr and his mother moved to the Birmingham area after Hurrican Katrina destroyed their home.

As Carr’s story got out, it captured the attention of someone who felt indebted to the young man for his dedication to the company.

Bellhops CEO, Luke Marklin, read about Carr’s story on Sunday morning. He drove from Tennessee to Alabama the next day to show Carr his gratitude.

With cameras surrounding the two, Marklin revealed he wanted to gift Carr something for his perseverance.

In the video, Marklin acknowledges that Carr is perfect for the company.

“You got everything you need to be at Bellhop but one piece is missing – a way to get there.”

Carr agrees.

Marklin then points to his 2014 Ford Escape:

“This is my car and I drive it just barely. I’d like it to be your car.”

Carr is stunned. He remains speechless.

“I really think that it’s in much better hands with you than it is with me.”

Carr thanks Marklin and the two share a hug. The crowd claps as Carr is given something that he both needs and deserves.

The police department even dedicated a post to the young man stating that they were “proud” of him and how he “made an impact” on them.

Carr also had something to share about his experience.

“I tell people if you think over 20 miles is a lot, then come walk in my shoes because my shoes was really killing me that day.”

It’s good to see that he has a sense of humor about the situation.

Much deserved, Walter!
